Student Teach Abroad

Did you know that over 100 IU education students do their student teaching overseas each year?

IU South Bend students are invited to consider the possibility of student teaching in Japan, Ireland, Spain, Italy, New Zealand, Australia, Costa Rica, Ghana, Tanzania or ten other countries around the world.

This exciting study abroad program is more affordable than you would think!

As part of the program, earn three credits of MA coursework and teach eight to ten weeks abroad. Complete about three hours of online coursework each month for the semester before departure.

What about my Indiana licensure requirements?

Student teachers first teach 10 weeks in Indiana before departure, which meets Indiana licensing requirements.

Can I use financial aid?

Most financial aid for which students are eligible may be applied to costs abroad.

Where will I stay?

Most programs include homestays for student-teachers.

What will I do?

After preparatory coursework in Indiana and 10 weeks of local student teaching, you will have a chance to learn from master teachers abroad, serving as teaching assistants as well as leading your own class sessions. Student teachers abroad learn about the local communities through service projects, cultural programs, and host-family activities.

How much does it cost?

Costs vary by program, but some programs are quite affordable; for example, accommodation in Costa Rica costs approximately $90/week! See the full lists of costs at the IU Global Gateway for teachers

Who do I need to contact?

Students who would like to student-teach abroad should get in touch with Amara Studhling astuehli@indiana.edu.

What other opportunities are available?

IU also offers a program for student teaching in the Navajo Nation in the states of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. Students who take part in this program have the chance to participate in cultural events including Navajo ceremonies and visit nearby National Parks. This is one of the most affordable student teaching “away” programs as housing costs are covered.

IU South Bend Director of International Programs Lisa Zwicker (zwicker@iusb.edu) would also be happy to assist.
